It's been a while!
Oct. 3rd, 2007 09:17 amIn order to get good academic karma, and because my dad had a stroke of sudden inspiration, my first activity after returning to the east coast was a trip to the Mark Twain house in Hartford. It's rather self consciously divided into the museum area (where the walls are covered in snappy sayings) and the house itself. Apparently, the Twain family (:P) was big on pets. Their front entry also resembles something from Myst, with dark wooden pillars, a fountain, and geometric designs painted on the wall to resemble mother of pearl edging. The other highlight was his library. The man read possibly...everything that was available back then. In addition to that, the library was open to their conservatory which was overwhelmingly verdant and had a fountain. The library appeared to have four walls, but suddenly, upon looking at the far wall, a second little room became visible, and it looked like the plants were attempting to take over. The bed frame in the master bedroom had cherubs on it, much to everyone's amusement. It sounds like his wife came from an extremely well to do family, and tried to make the house look as impressive as possible, yet this was done in possibly the most innovative ways imaginable. I was left with the overwhelming impression of Twain as a trend setter in his personal life as well as his literary one, even if he wasn't particularly conscious or excited about this role.
SA training went fine. I really like my hall committee this year. We click way better than any of the previous ones, despite the fact that my new HP might possibly be the most anal being on the face of the planet. XD Ah well, her high standards will make me look like I'm doing a better job.
I will continue with updates and other assorted craziness later.
