The Longest Catch Up Post EVER, part 2
Oct. 6th, 2007 08:21 pmSo, let's see...
After the Twain House and training comes the bit about getting my room set up. I really like how I have things arranged, and I bought the coolest mosquito net curtain thing to hang around 3 sides of my bed. It's awesome. I was also delighted to find that the person here before left my ceiling covered in glowing stars. YES! I also have some fabulous Shadow Hearts II art, courtesy of Laura and Ann. I asked Ann to take pictures of the setup for me, so perhaps I will be able to post those soon. I mostly like how the room's divided into a sort of entertainment area with my TV and bookshelf and food, and my bed and desk.
Of course, I also have a new fishy friend. It's another beta named Zabulon (because someone thought a stereotypical villain name would be funny). How I ended up with him was quite the saga, let me tell you.
When I came back, I had NO intention of owning another beta. Ever. Flynn's death (and DP's later) left me very, very sad. I wanted to try and have a couple fancy goldfish instead. I went to PetCo directly after training one night, and they had two calico and one golden fish left. I wanted to get both calicos, but as I was collecting items for a tank, a little girl decided that she wanted just one of the two. Goldfish are extremely social creatures, so leaving the other one alone seemed cruel. I bought him, and bought the gold one to live with him. The calico was named Cosset, and the gold was named Arthur because his hyperness reminded me of Wart from the Sword in the Stone as a fish. Anyway, within 48 hours, Cosset developed a horrible buoyancy problem, and started swimming sideways. The first thing I did was feed them less, because those problems are sometimes diet related. Cosset seemed to get better after the first time he skipped a meal, but when I did feed them, he decided it would be a good idea to eat every last mote of food. His problem got worse and worse, and despite my best effort (and tons of trips to PetCo), Cosset basically ate himself to death. Goldfish are kinda dumb. Maddie then suggested that we look for a new companion for Arthur at Dave's (which sells pets and soda?) instead. We did, but they didn't have any comparable sized goldfish. The staff mentioned that betas could get along with goldfish, so that's how Zabulon originally came into the picture. He was really timid with Arthur for the first couple days, until Arthur tried to eat Zab's bubble nest. The next day, Allison noticed that Arthur looked really agitated, so we had to separate the two of them. Sadly, this came too late, and Arthur died too. Apparently, Zabulon was just biding his time so he could effectively scare Arthur to death. Yeah. That's what I get for naming him after the head of the Day Watch. Of course, after this all happened, Ann decided to get a beta as well and she named him Boris. Long live the blood feud.
Classes started, I like journalism, biochem may in fact be killing me, and that's about it for that arena.
Much more interesting is the search for life after college. It looks like I have an internship set up with Genetic Alliance (www.geneticalliance.org) over j-term, and it could turn into a summer gig, or even a job. I also got invited by the CDC to apply for the Winston Churchill Fellowship for a one year fellowship at Cambridge. ^_^
We'll see how that goes. David Gardner said I should e-mail him if I was interested, and yeah. He hasn't e-mailed back.
